The Channel Islands Figure Skating Club is located at the Channel Islands Ice Center in Oxnard, California. It is on Highway 101 and just off the Ventura Road off-ramp.
Our much-loved friend Caroline Vollmer passed away at a prematurely young age in the wee hours of the morning on September 5. She has been battling cancer the past few years, all the while continuing to pursue her skating goals. She was an Adult Silver level skater.
Caroline was long time member of the Channel Islands Figure Skating Club and test chair of the club from 2005-2007. Being test chair requires many, many volunteer hours and organization. Many CIFSC skaters passed tests at their home rink thanks to her.
Caroline was such an inspiration to skaters and a delight to watch. She participated in our competitions and shows, representing CIFSC in many adult competitions. She was a talented and hard worker. Her spins were fast and centered. Her jumps were high. She skated with speed and confidence. She was one of our finest skaters.
Caroline had a few "signature" elements. Her back shoot-the-duck lutz was fast and springy. Her forward glide into a catch-foot to spiral was very difficult and took so much strength and balance. She also had a hydroplane to loop jump that always left spectators cheering.
The last two years Caroline lived with her sister and her sister’s partner in Colorado. She continued to skate -traveling to rinks all over Colorado including Vail, Breckenridge, and Keystone – which, at 5 acres, boasts to be the largest Zamboni-maintained ice rink in North America. In addition to skating she also went snowboarding, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, cross-country ski-skate, snowshoeing, horseback riding, paddle boarding, to the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival, and of course her favorite shopping, shopping , and more shopping.
We, her friends, miss her vibrant personality on the ice. We are grateful for our time together, her friendship, and her loyalty to the club and its skaters.
Caroline skates in heaven now…where there is a little less gravity than on Earth. Yep, that’s right, it is easier to do double and triple jumps up there.
Caroline, you go girl!
